After a sluggish first few shifts, the Buffalo Sabres played an upbeat first period to take a 1-1 tie into the second period.
The Sabres started the scoring with Drew Stafford's first goal of the season. Stafford buried a nifty pass from Tyler Ennis from behind the net. The Sabres led for most of the first frame, until Stafford took a penalty in the later stages of the period. Dougie Hamilton scored his first career NHL goal after Ryan Miller made several stellar saves. The puck eventually found Hamilton at the point and he beat Miller who was out of position.
