Thomas Vanek's record-breaking start to the 2013 season has won the Buffalo Sabres forward Third Star of the Month honors for January.
In five games, Vanek has recorded six goals and nine assists to lead the NHL in points. He has two hat tricks on the season. He is the only NHL player aside from Mario Lemieux to have at least five points twice in the first seven games of the season. Vanek missed one game with a muscle strain.
The first star was Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson, who went 5-0-1 with a 0.99 GAA. Second star was Sharks forward Patrick Marleau, who leads the NHL with nine goals. He also has five assists.
