U.S. Olympic Miracle on Ice Voted Top Sporting Moment in New York State

Voters in an ESPN poll named the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's semifinal win over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid the greatest sporting moment ever involving New York state.


That moment easily surpassed the No. 2 moment, David Tyree's helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII that led to the winning score in the New York Giants' 17-14 win over the New England Patriots. Tyree has a second tie to the Empire State, as he played his college ball at Syracuse University.

Neither the Buffalo Bills nor Buffalo Sabres had any moments up for consideration in the vote.
